Khadija K. Swims, ESq.
Khadija K. Swims is the owner and sole proprietor of The Law Offices of Khadija K. Swims, headquartered in Saginaw, Michigan, with legal services available statewide. A dedicated advocate for underrepresented and marginalized communities, Attorney Swims has built her career on delivering justice and ensuring equity in the legal system.
Her professional journey began as an Assistant Public Defender, where she served in the Saginaw Defenders Office, the Washtenaw Public Defenders Office, and the Kent County Office of the Defender. At the Saginaw Defenders Office, she specialized in Domestic Violence (DV) cases, successfully defending women who were wrongfully charged as defendants. Remarkably, every DV case she litigated on behalf of wrongly accused clients resulted in an acquittal—showcasing her exceptional skills and dedication to justice.
Attorney Swims’ expertise extends beyond litigation. She served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Janelle A. Lawless in the Ingham County 30th Judicial Circuit Court and contributed to the Flint Water Crisis case as a law clerk with The Law Offices of Teresa A. Bingman. Her comprehensive knowledge spans the fields of criminal, family, and child welfare law, bolstered by experience in public health, social work, and nonprofit operations.
Before practicing law, Attorney Swims was the Senior Community Health Consultant for the Michigan Child Death Review Program at the Michigan Public Health Institute. In this role, she advocated for policy changes at local, state, and federal levels, improving child safety, health, and welfare. She also trained and supported 28 counties across Michigan in data collection and program evaluation, amplifying her impact on public policy.
Her background in child welfare is equally robust. As a Foster Care Case Manager for a private agency, Attorney Swims developed extensive knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws, championing best practices to benefit children and families. Her advocacy further extended through her role as a Public Policy Fellow at Public Sector Consultants, where she evaluated and enhanced programs in children’s mental health, anti-gang initiatives, and faith-based community projects. She co-authored an evaluation section of a federal grant, securing $500,000 for community programs.
Adept at navigating the intersection of law, public policy, and community advocacy, Attorney Swims blends compassion with a diplomatic approach, ensuring that all voices are heard and respected in the most challenging circumstances.
Attorney Swims holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Criminal Justice Administration, both from Grand Valley State University. She earned her Juris Doctorate from Western Michigan University, Cooley Law School. A proud member of the Saginaw Bar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she has also served on the Foster Care Review Board, the State Court Administrative Office’s Child and Family Services Review Committee, American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Board of Directors.
With an unwavering commitment to justice, Attorney Swims continues to fight for the rights of her clients while making meaningful contributions to her community and beyond.
